Mo Ibrahim, a Sudanese-British billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, was born in Sudan in 1946. Despite growing up in a modest family, he excelled academically and pursued electrical engineering at the University of Bradford in England. Mo Ibrahim ventured into the telecommunications sector, gaining experience with various companies.

In 1989, he established Mobile Systems International (MSI), a company specializing in designing mobile networks. Notably, in 2000, Mo Ibrahim successfully sold MSI to Marconi, a telecommunications giant, for a staggering sum exceeding $900 million.

In 1998, Ibrahim founded Celtel, a mobile phone company operating in Africa. Under his leadership, Celtel rapidly expanded, becoming one of Africa’s largest mobile phone providers with over 24 million subscribers across 14 countries. The company’s success led to its acquisition by Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications Company in 2005, with a sale value reaching $3.4 billion.

Post-Celtel, Mo Ibrahim established the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to promoting good governance and leadership in Africa. The Foundation’s flagship initiative, the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, annually recognizes leaders who demonstrate exceptional governance and contribute significantly to the continent.

Mo Ibrahim has earned accolades for his impactful work in business and philanthropy, receiving prestigious awards such as the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award, the African Leadership Prize, and the Order of the British Empire. He also serves on the Africa regional advisory board of London Business School.
